Most girls and women all over the world make the same resolution on New Year’s Eve year in year out; To watch their weight, downwards. They purpose to hit the gym and change their eating habits so they can loose weight. It’s a struggle shared by a majority and therefore makes easy conversation. In fact it’s okay to add weight as a compliment will follow.
People with more weight are lucky because they have so everyone concerned with and about them. Clothes are made to plus size while foods are manufactured with less sugar. Then they get fancy descriptions like big, Thicke, et al. These people have a whole movement.
What about the skinny, slim petite person? Unless of course she’s a runway model and has to maintain that weight who cares about her? If she says she’s added some weight and needs to exercise she gets dagger eyes thrown at her. She’s an unwelcome reminder that they need to hit the gym. No one cares if she is underweight or has a health condition.Skinny people have the perfect body really so let’s not bother with her.
Woe unto the skinny woman whose body and weight remains intact after childbirth and marriage. In Africa this is frowned upon since fuller bodies are more appreciated. A full bodied woman embodies the husband’s love and implies that the woman is content.
Did you know that there are women who struggle to gain weight? Ever bothered to just listen to a skinny sister instead of just talking about how you wish you had her body? Do you know how difficult it is to get fitting clothes? Now they call us size zero and size one, like size zero really? At this rate they’ll start making negative sizes.
A skinny bitch has two options when shopping, actually three. Go to the children’s department hoping to get something that will fit, mostly skirts or tops. Secondly, she can shop at the average person’s size then take the clothes to a Fundi for a fitting. Last but not least is to have custom made clothes at cost which is still a risk. The few fundis I have gone to have always taken it upon themselves to add an inch or two to my clothes in case I (miraculously) add weight and I always end up having an oversized dress or skirt.
All my life, actually my adult life, I have always had people looking at my plate intimidating me in subtle ways to serve more . The women at my chama are not discreet and always lament at my poor eating habits. What most people forget is that we are all unique. We have different metabolism rates and our sacs have different capacities. I for one eat lots of small meals a day since I get full quickly yet get hungry by the hour 😂
Next time you are whining about your weight cut the skinny sister some slack so she can vent too. Her life isn’t the walk in the park you envision it to be.
